When I graduated with my masters degree in Oriental Medicine I was discouraged from heading home to San Luis Obispo to set up my practice. “It’s a small town and not sophisticated enough” I was told. I love SLO and I missed my home so I moved anyway. My experience has been totally at odds with those dire predictions.

First all you require to consider acupucture and Oriental Medicine is an open mind and a need.

Some people have had previous experience and either like the way it adds to their quality of life or have conditions that require maintanience to prevent problems. This often happens with people who lead very stressful lives and want some relief and to prevent the damage it does to the body.

Some people have tried all that conventional medicine has to offer and are not satisfied with the results or the treatment options. Such as the people who don’t want to live on pain medications and feel surgery shoudn’t be their first option

Some people want to cover all their options and have added Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture to enhance their results. This happens a lot with people undergoing fertility treatments

Many people have found Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture a viable healing alternative. Especially my sophisticated and knowledgable patients here in SLO

No this is not a comment on the state of the world and it’s disasters. I noticed recently a marked increase in the number of news and health stories about sleep problems and insomnia. I found the reason in Consumer Reports! A couple of new sleep drugs have been released and their PR people are out there increasing the “perceived need” for their products. The article in Consumer Reports went on to criticize the ads for the insomnia drugs and their inaccuracies. I will leave that to them, they did a good job. I just want to comment on drugs that are sold to treat symptoms not causes. It is great for the Pharmaceutical Industry, but not for sick people. News stories are being used to sell high priced drugs with long lists of side effects that they don’t have to mention because it’s not an ad.

OK now for my commercial. Traditional oriental medicine (TOM) divides insomnia into several patterns:

1.can’t fall asleep

2. can’t stay asleep

3. early awakening

4. restless sleep

Combinations are common. The last two, for example, frequently occur with menopause or PMS. TOM has treatments that can eliminate all of these. What does Consumer Reports say? In an earlier article it listed acupuncture number one as a treatment for insomnia. So now you have options. Keep your eyes open for “news” stories for other drugs. I’ll bet you find them. I have.

The tendency in western medicine is to find something that works and then try to make it do everything. When that fails good things are often discarded (as in baby and bathwater). Currently vitamin D is at the beginning of that cycle and vitamin E is at the end. Vitamin D is being touted for everything from cavities to arthritis, depression, chronic pain and heart disease. While it is wonderfully useful it is hardly a miracle cure. The most interesting function of vitamin D is to treat inflammation. Since there is growing evidence that most chronic disease involve some form of inflammation this is a very useful function. It is used in massive doses to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis. I have found most people with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue have inadequate levels of vitamin D. Supplementation may relieve some of their symptoms. Vitamin D is also important in treating Osteoporosis. With low levels of Vitamin D most drugs are not able to change bone density. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 40% to 80% of the population is deficient in vitamin D. It is made from the exposure of skin to sun and it is found in meat and eggs. With the current attitude toward these sources is it any wonder most people could benefit from some form of supplementation? My research leads me to recommend it as one of the three supplements everyone should be using. Vitamin D3 starting at 2000 IU is what I recommend. I have found it in a liquid form and 1 drop is 2000 IU so it is easy to take. If you want to know if vitamin D could help you, or you want to know how to tell if you should be taking more, call me.

Few things bother me more than misleading drug advertisements and medical press releases. Media spin concerning our health decisions should not be allowed. Instead it is quite common, especially in drug advertisements. My current least favorite is for Gardasil. I am going to give you the facts. Gardasil is a vaccine for human papillomavirus (HPV). It protects against only 4 of the 18 types of HPV. HPV is not usually dangerous and is easily treated in healthy women so advertisers have thrown in the dreaded “C” word, Cancer. According to both the CDC and the FDA:

HPV is not dangerous in healthy women

It is often short lived and may go away without treatment

It is not associated with cervical cancer

Instead of trying to make parents feel guilty for not vaccinating their girls, Merck should feel guilty for turning them into needless guinea pigs and charging them $300 for the privilege. I haven’t mentioned side effects. Should I? Oh why not. The ad admits to:

Pain

Swelling

Itching and redness at injection site

Fever, nausea or dizziness

The FDA’s Vaccine Adverse Event Report lists:

Fainting

Seizures

Pain in joints

Paralysis

Death (32 reported)

Of course this sterling record is why they are trying to make it mandatory for school age girls; it couldn’t be for the money.
